How to keep your mushrooms fresher, longer than you have ever imagined.

fresh mushrooms to store in a beeswax wrap

Using a beeswax wrap can help keep mushrooms fresher for longer by creating a breathable and slightly moist environment that mimics the conditions in which mushrooms naturally grow. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use a beeswax wrap to store mushrooms:

  1. Clean the mushrooms: Start by gently cleaning the mushrooms to remove any dirt or debris. You can use a soft brush or a damp cloth to wipe them clean. Avoid submerging mushrooms in water, as they tend to absorb moisture.
  2. Prepare the beeswax wrap: Ensure that your beeswax wrap is clean and dry. If it's your first time using a new wrap, wash it in cool water, then let it air dry. Choose the wrap to size: If your beeswax wrap is large, you can choose an appropriate size for your mushroom container. The usual 10x10” wrap will cover your standard mushroom container nicely. It should be large enough to wrap the mushrooms comfortably but not too tightly.
  3. Wrap the mushrooms, if they are bought loose, in a large beeswax wrap. Place the cleaned mushrooms in the center of the beeswax wrap. Fold one side of the wrap over the mushrooms, tucking the edges underneath. Then, fold the remaining sides of the wrap to create a secure package.
  4. Store in the refrigerator: Once wrapped, place the beeswax-wrapped mushrooms in the refrigerator. The cool temperature will help extend their shelf life. It is best to store them in the crisper drawer.
  5. Maintain freshness: Beeswax wraps are breathable and help to maintain the mushrooms' moisture balance. However, mushrooms are still delicate, and their shelf life is relatively short. While this method will keep mushrooms for approximately two weeks, it's best to use them within ten days for optimal freshness.
  6. Reuse and clean the beeswax wrap: After using the beeswax wrap, gently rinse it with cold water and mild soap only if needed. Avoid hot water, as it can melt the wax coating. Hang or lay it flat to dry, and it'll be ready for reuse.

Remember, beeswax wraps are not airtight like plastic wraps, so the breathability of the wax wraps will keep the mushrooms for an extended period.  Enjoy your fresh mushrooms while they are at their best.
